07b. Traditional stoves – India

According to ARTI, these typically are made of unfired clay, have a low efficiency, produce a lot of smoke and soot and have a life of just a couple of years. Two or three stone fires are also common.

The above picture shows a traditional shielded stove (right), and the improved version (left), which includes a grate, pot raiser, improved materials, and shape to increase thermal efficiency. This has been installed by ARTI.
